Hazel Smith - Music Promo Shoot

I had the pleasure to work with Hazel Euan-Smith on creating these beautiful pictures for her. It has been a long time in the making and due to either illness or weather related issues on both ends finally on a lovely sunny spring day in Regents Park we got to do the shoot. I absolutely love the results off these images and hope you do too.

Sabrina Promo Shoot

My sister is an amazing singer and currently working on the launch off her single and eventual album. So we had planned for a long time to do a shoot together. She had assisted me on a couple of shoots and was happy seeing how I worked. (Yep I have to prove my skills to my family too, hard critics but the best critics lol) So we planned a shoot with her in her costume and went around East London finding locations for the afternoon. This is the result from that shoot.

One Lens, One Prop Shoot - Project

I started a personal project that will continue for awhile called "One Lens, One Prop". The aim of this project is to capture portraits of perfect strangers on the street, in the aim to both boost my confidence in approaching people and to capture amazing portraits of normal people with one restriction. I only allowed myself to use one lens and one prop (prop held by my friend who is also doing this project with me Darrell and Saj), check out their blog to see what they captured also.

The lens I have chosen to use is the 70-200mm IS L lens with a Silver reflector. After standing around for a couple of hours I only managed to persuade 2 people to take the challenge. Here are the pics.

This post will be updated every time I do more work on the project.

The Meetup

I joined this website called Meetup and joined a group for photographers. Last Saturday I went to the first of many of these pre-arranged groups were we got the chance to shoot a handful of great models. Here are the images from this day's shoot. Ben Wong – Editorial Style

I had approached this shoot with an entirely new perspective. The original brief was to practice some different light setups using my really cool soft box. However because Ben is an experienced model in the editorial region, he asked if the pictures could be taken in that style, so thought “why not”.

This shoot was so amazing. He had a bunch of pictures that he wanted to imitate and so did I so we made it a collaborative shoot and sat down discussing what we should do and how until we got the final shot. This is by far the best way to go about a shoot making it a lot easier for all parties to visualize the final look.

I used only one off camera flash and one lens for all shots (580 EXII and a 70-200mm L set to f2.8)

All images are all light by flash (except for the bench shot), I used either the bare head or an orange gel to give me that “Awesome!!” sun set look (my favourite shot of the session). Thanks Ben for such a great shoot and Sabrina for being a brave yet cold assistant.

Nerkesha Studio Shoot

I had the pleasure in January to have a shoot with Nerkesha. It was the first time in a proper studio setting and I have to admit it took me some time to get used to the "restrictive" nature of it considering I'm more of an outdoor location kind of person.

However it was a very good experience and would do it again. Anyway here are the images from the shoot.

I now have completed the Video for this shoot take a look here it is!!!!

I had the pleasure in September to work with this lovely model. I have been delaying the post of these pictures only because I wanted to release the pictures along with the YouTube/Vimeo video of the shoot. (This will come soon as I now have two to post)

This shoot was taken in the Southbank with loads of skateboarders watching, Fay handled it very well especially on such a cold day. Make-up was done by Katrina Jayne.

I wanted to make this shoot more controlled so used two strobe lights, one as main and the second to cast a slight red glow of hair light. Hope you like the photos and I will announce the video once it is complete, very soon.

This month I had the pleasure of shooting this lovely couple. I found them on Model Mayhem and luck was with me as they turned out to be an actual couple. They were so relaxed with each other and I believe this showed in the images.

It was a cloudy day but with the use of a silver reflector it just gave me the extra pop in the face and eyes that I needed.

This was also a recorded shoot so once the video is complete I will announce it. Thanks Jazzy & Abigail.

I had the pleasure to shoot this lovely couples wedding. I had to use on camera flash and bounce the light in most of these images, the environment required this. Studio Style Shoot

I had the opportunity to work with some friends and models in a studio style shoot. This was the first studio shoot that I did and it wasn't hard, I just applied the light set-up I normally use on a location shoot and boy my strobes paid off a treat. I also got to use an Interfit studio light for the last three images of Bianca.

First images are of model Renata who was also the MUA for this shoot.
The next model is Bianca.

It was an absolute pleasure working with them.

Kamal Family Portrait

I had the pleasure of shooting this lovely family for their daughters 1st Birthday. I had done a mini studio set up for them using only two lights. With some experimentation I decided to use the second light as a hair light and it paid off well. I also used a new white balance card the Lastolite XpoBalance, a wonderful tool to help you set a custom WB. Any way here are the pictures from that shoot. Enjoy.

New Website up and Running

I'm so happy to announce that my new cool website is now up and running. With just a few little tethering issues that I will sort out. Shonola "Nolie" Smith

I had the pleasure of shooting this model. She allowed me to try out something new which turned out to be new to her also and that was an urban based shoot in the middle of Oxford street...literally.

I decided to take out my flash and experiment more with this as I normally use natural light.

Not too long ago I had the privilege to shoot this couples wedding and oh wow was it beautiful.

I have to tell you this couple were on FIRE. I had such a great time at this wedding and they were so happy it just made the shoot so much more amazing to capture this happiness.

The Good, the bad and the ugly...

I took the title for this blog entry from one of my favourite Western Movies to help describe my feelings during one of my recent shoots.

I got two models together who met for the first time to help me simulate a real couple shoot. Sometimes this works, in this case it didn't completely work...out...great. I did however manage to get some cool pictures but the "Love" wasn't completely their. This is were the skills of the photographer are of extreme importance. You have to learn to adapt to the different strengths and weaknesses of the model(s).

In this case both models had really strong personalities and thus wanted to out-shine each other, this can prove to be deadly.

Like the ending of "The Good, the bad and the ugly" (directors cut), their is a long dragged out gun-slinging segment, the dread and anxiety in each cowboys eyes growing with each passing frame...guns are drawn and Clint Eastwood walks away victorious, this was the feeling I had, of achievement in a difficult situation.

So I present the photo of Bukky and Samar. This was taken at the Southbank captured at a moment when both models completely relaxed and was joking around. To me this made the shoot worth it and the moment caught, real and believable.

Hi everyone, I would like to introduce you to Raique (Brazilian and pronounced as hike) and Nikhil.

I had the opportunity to shoot these two amazing models in the lovely surroundings of Victoria Park. The aim of this shoot was to simulate an engagement or private bride and groom shoot with a strong sense of romance in the air and these two pulled it off like professionals. I had a great afternoon with these two and I know they did too.
I kept this shoot very simple and light and used only one camera (Canon 50D) with two lenses (70-200mm f2.8 and 50mm 1.8) and most images were shot between f2.2 and f3.5.

It's been a while since I have had an update on this blog of mine and I do apologize. I have had a crazy three months from back operation to holiday to being stuck on holiday due to the ash cloud and then...weather when I get back.

Anyway enough of that. I have actually been working really hard. I can tell you that I am re-designing my JP's Photography website and that launch date has been set to 1st June 2010 (fingers crossed) It is having a huge overhaul that I'm sure you will all like (fingers double crossed). I will disclose the details at a later blog.

For now I want to tell you of my shoot I had on Saturday 15th, It was a cool fancy dress party for a guy called Darren Bull (happy 30th). I decided to do a simple "prom style" studio allowing all visitors who turn up to have there portrait taken in full costume. They all loved it and I had a blast. For now I will show you the setup and then will post a few photos from the event on another blog once Darren has received them himself.

The kit I was using are:

1x Canon Speedlite 580EXII
2x Cactus KF36 (formally known as the Vivitar 285hv)
2x Interfit 109cm Umbrellas' (so happy to have these)

Like I said I'll show you the effects of this setup very soon.

Miss Diva Luscious Fashion Show 2010

It's been awhile since my last blog entry but I have a good reason for this...I had to have a back operation...It's ok now just house bound but thought today would be a good time to upload this shoot taken in February.

Miss Diva put on a rocking show again and had a fine selection of models and MUA's I again managed to grab some alone time with the models and get a few portrait shots of them.

The setup is very simple one strobe on a stand and a umbrella, the lens was a 50mm, anyway tell me what you think and believe me I have alot more coming soon.....

Diva Luscious Designs Fashion Show

These are pictures taken from my latest event shoot. The difficulties of this shoot were easily overcome. The location was at the University Arts London and had really poor lighting. Thanks god for the handy Canon Speedlight. This really helped out.

After the fashion show I had the opportunity to have a quick one2one with some of the models. Again not the best light was available but with a quick scan of the room and securing my corner I managed to have a section were I could bounce my light from off the camera and make it feel as if the models were standing in front of a really lovely window.

Airbrush Heaven

From the title I guess you can guess what this is about. As part of my re-invention of "one self" I have decided to really hone my Photoshop skills in the attempt to creating my own style. Now don't get me wrong airbrushing is not a signature skill, but getting it right is a skill. So below is my attempt at doing this and I am really happy with the results.

Family photo shoot with Trevor and Selina

I was asked to do a family photo shoot for Trevor, Selina and their beautiful new baby girl Jasmine. I had temporarily converted my front room into a studio using only sheets that I taped to my ceiling. Below are the results of that shoot.

I used a 50mm lens on my Canon 50D. For light I used a Canon 580EXII bounced into the curtain and up into the ceiling. for catch lights I used my Lastolite Triflector.

Da Spotlight Club event

This event called "Da Spotlight" was thrown by a company called "So Modern". They throw events like these across London every few months. They have recently signed me on to become their sole photographer and these are the pictures from the last event they throw September 19th 2009.

London Fashion Weekend - 2009

This event was the first I have ever gone to, it was very interesting and a good experience in terms of how to work with your camera. I tried to obtain the highest quality of images by shooting at ISO 100 and around an aperture of f5.6-8 as you may have guessed this posed a problem...slow shutter speed thus lack of focus/sharpness on all images. So with not a moment to loose I quickly tested shots in the breaks and came up with the next settings. ISO 400, f8 giving me lovely depth and sharpness. Off course for the close ups I wanted to use a nice wide aperture and shot with f2.8.

Below are some of the results from today's event. All pictures were taken on a Canon 50D and a 70-200mm L USM lens. Tell me what you think.

Beginnings

I have been avoiding doing a blog for a VERY LONG time. No particular reason really but I didn't feel like I would have much to say nor would I be interesting enough to be followed.

But I'm now going through a self "build" phase and want to push my photography to a much stronger level.

Many people have said they like my photos and they are "really good" but I'm so highly critical of myself that it is sometimes hard to fully convince myself, especially when I have only been in the game for 2 years and everything I know has been self taught.

So through this medium of the "blog" and other places, I will be using it to display my work and any ideas that i may be working on.

I will try to update it as much as possible so bare with me.
